George Smith of Heritage Farms in Pataskala, Ohio is not your typical 75-year-old. Each and every day his barns are full of horses and people. His job starts early in the morning and goes into the evening to ensure the horses are receiving the best care. For Smith, having people and horses around is something that he truly enjoys.

Smith has always been involved in agriculture, but it was not originally horses. Growing up, his family raised sheep and dairy cattle. Dairy farming was originally the area he was particularly interested in, but new opportunities presented itself which eventually led him to boarding horses in his converted dairy barn.

Smith’s farm was founded in 1811 and has been in his family since. One of his current projects involves restoring the house that has been on the property since 1830. His love of historic sites is not limited to his own. Smith began working in real estate in the 1970s with many projects involving restoration. 

During the late 90s, Smith changed paths and began working with Johnstown-Monroe School district as a custodian. Then in 2001, he saw a new opportunity present itself and Smith decided to open his 96-acre property up to boarding horses.

This endeavor has grown tremendously since 2001. He has built a new barn with an arena which he will eventually add 40 more stalls to. In addition to the indoor arena, Smith also has added outdoor dressage arena and a large fenced grass jump field. Smith’s farm also plays host to horse shows for visage and cross country style riding. He has more plans for his farm and many more projects to complete before he is done.
